Evidence-based wellness publication, Health, revealed its first-ever “Health Advocacy Awards” featuring 10 healthcare professionals who share their personal experiences to uplift, educate, and inspire others. The list features Sundeep Singal Boparai, operations manager at Northwell Health’s LGBTQ transgender program.

At Northwell, Boparai, a queer Sikh, has turned his personal experiences into a mission to support marginalized communities. In 2024 alone, he helped assist approximately 4,500 patients through Northwell’s LGBTQ Transgender Program, which provides comprehensive medical and mental health services.

The Center for Transgender Care’s medical director, David Rosenthal praised Boparai's dedication, stating, “Boparai brings together passion for the LGBT community with an acute understanding of health care delivery and administration. He is a wonderful mix of a health care advocate, efficient health care administrator and role model in all he accomplishes.”

Commenting on his experience wih the hospital’s program, Boparai said, “Working at the LGBTQ Transgender Program has been transformative for me. I meet people often who are where I was 15 years ago. Seeing them get the services they need, which were not available to me, and my ability to help them live a happy, healthy life is both rewarding and empowering.”

The Health Advocacy Awards celebrate individuals who inspire change and uplift communities by sharing their lived experiences. The award committee, comprised of health editors, advocates, and board-certified medical professionals, highlighted the importance of recognizing advocates like Boparai in fostering inclusivity in healthcare.

“Together, we can ensure that health care isn't just a service, but a sanctuary where everyone, regardless of gender, sexuality, or background, is treated with dignity and respect. This recognition strengthens my resolve to continue creating a community where all of us can thrive,” Boparai remarked. “Healthcare should be a sanctuary where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.”

Boparai’s academic background includes a master’s degree from Hofstra University and a doctorate from the Medical University of South Carolina.
