Sunil Bharti Mittal, the founder and chairperson of Bharti Enterprises, has been bestowed with the United Kingdom’s Honorary Knighthood, making him the first Indian to be granted the honor by King Charles III.

Expressing his gratitude, Mittal stated, "I am deeply humbled by this gracious acknowledgment from His Majesty, King Charles. The historical relations between the UK and India are now entering a new era of increased cooperation and collaboration."

Remaining steadfast in his commitment to fortifying the economic and bilateral trade relationships between the two nations, he added, "I remain committed to working towards strengthening the economic and bilateral trade relationships between our two great nations. I am thankful to the Government of the UK, whose support and keen attention to the needs of business have been critical in making the country an attractive investment destination."

Mittal was previously conferred with Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honor, in 2007. He has notably served as the chair of the B20 India Action Council on African Economic Integration during India's G20 Presidency. Currently, Mittal holds the position of a serving commissioner at the International Telecommunication Union/UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development.

The Knight Commander (KBE) is granted for a pre-eminent contribution in any field of activity, usually at the national level or in a capacity acknowledged by peer groups as inspirational and significant nationally, demonstrating sustained commitment.

Notably, the KBE is awarded in an honorary capacity to foreign nationals. While UK nationals receiving the Knighthood are bestowed with the titles Sir or Dame, non-UK nationals, upon receiving the honor, append KBE (or DBE for women) after their name rather than utilizing titles such as Sir or Dame.

The Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) is one of the highest accolades presented by the British Sovereign to civilians. Noteworthy individuals previously honored with the Honorary KBE by the late Queen Elizabeth II include Ratan Tata (2009), Ravi Shankar (2001), and Jamshed Irani (1997).
