Indian American education advocate Sunny Reddy was sworn in as a new member of Wayne State University (WSU) Board of Governors last week in a ceremony at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center.

Reddy, a Republican who earned his master’s in chemical engineering from Wayne State in 1994, was elected by Michigan voters in November 2024. He joins Michael Busuito, who was reelected to the board, as part of the newly formed board. Reddy and Busuito will serve eight-year terms, expiring in 2032, with their first official meeting scheduled for February 14, 2025, an official statement noted.

In his remarks after taking the oath of office, Reddy shared his deep connection to the university and the role it played in shaping his career. "Wayne State has always been more than a university to me. It’s a community where diversity is celebrated, challenges are embraced, and dreams come alive,” Reddy said.

“As a student here, I was inspired by my peers, guided by incredible faculty, and supported by this amazing institution. My goal is to ensure every student has the same opportunities to grow, succeed, and thrive,” he added.

“This journey has been more than a campaign; its been about a shared dream of making higher education affordable, accessible, and free of bias. As I step into this role, I carry with me the hopes of our community and a commitment to create opportunities for every student to thrive.”

An entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community leader, Reddy is the founder and CEO of VoIP Office, a cloud-based communications provider. He is also known for his involvement in disaster relief efforts with the American Red Cross. Reddy has consistently advocated for accessible and affordable education and is passionate about fostering mentorship and alumni engagement to support current students.
