Yale University has named Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, the United States Surgeon General, as the Class Day speaker for the 2024 graduating class. A Yale alumnus, Murthy earned his medical and business degrees from the university in 2003.
Class Day, slated for May 19 at 2 p.m. on Old Campus, marks a festive prelude to commencement, featuring student performances, awards, and Murthy's address. Open to the public, the ceremony's details can be found on the Yale Commencement website.
Reflecting on the honor, Murthy expressed gratitude and highlighted Class Day as a time to cherish relationships and accomplishments. “As a proud Yale alumnus, and as the spouse of an equally proud Yale College alum, it is truly an honor to join Yale’s graduates on Class Day this year,” Murthy said.
“Class Day is a time to celebrate the relationships you’ve built, the knowledge you’ve gained, and the dreams you have shaped and forged. It’s also a moment to express our gratitude to all those who made this journey possible. I hope this day will be full of joy, appreciation, and friendship for all our graduates,” he added.
Since assuming office as the “nation’s doctor” in March 2021, Murthy has tackled pressing public health issues, particularly youth mental health and burnout among healthcare workers. As vice admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, he oversees efforts to serve underserved populations.
Beyond his governmental role, Murthy authored a bestseller, "Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World," and hosts the podcast "House Calls with Dr. Vivek Murthy."
Dean of Yale College Pericles Lewis commended Murthy's leadership, citing him as an inspiration for graduates. Murthy joins a distinguished list of past speakers, including Hillary Rodham Clinton ’73 J.D. and poet Elizabeth Alexander ’84. His selection promises an enriching Class Day experience for Yale's 2024 graduates.
