The Suromurchhana Foundation, a New York-and India based nonprofit dedicated to promoting Indian classical music honored Tabla Mestro Swapan Chaudhuri with its first Pt. A. Kanan & Vidushi Malabika Kanan Award, recognizing his extensive contributions to Hindustani classical music.
The award ceremony, held at Scandinavia House in New York City, drew a large audience of NYC’s Hindustani music community, along with music lovers from across the city.
Accepting the award, Chaudhuri remarked, “This award especially touches my heart because of my personal connection with the late Pt. A. Kanan, who offered invaluable support early in my career.”
The evening opened with a Hindustani-Carnatic vocal jugalbandi by Suromurchhana artists Namami Karmakar and Samyukta Ranganathan, performing alongside Amit Chatterjee on tabla, Anirban Chakraborty on harmonium, and Kabilan Jeganathan on mridangam.
Following the award presentation, Chaudhuri joined Suromurchhana founder and Kirana Gharana vocalist Sanjoy Banerjee, accompanied by Anirban Chakraborty on harmonium, for a performance of evening ragas. Their presentation of ragas Chhayanat, Shyam Kalyan, Shahana Kanada, and the bhajan Chalo Man Ganga Jamuna Teer was met with enthusiastic applause.
Founded by Sanjoy Banerjee in Kolkata in 2007, Suromurchhana was envisioned by the late Malabika Kanan. It offers one-on-one vocal music classes both in person and online in India, the USA, and internationally.
