Former Multnomah County Commissioner, Susheela Jayapal, who is running to represent Oregon’s third congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives released two campaign advertisements on Apr.25
The 30-second clips, “Talk About It,” and “Personal,” highlight Jayapal’s service as a progressive champion and abortion rights activist. They will run on streaming television and digital platforms in the first of major investments to bring her message to the district’s primary voters, an official statement from her campaign said.
In "Talk About It," Jayapal discusses her abortion decision as a young woman and how it shaped her fight to protect abortion rights, her partnership with a local Planned Parenthood to provide medication-assisted abortion, and her determination to halt the Republican-led national abortion ban in Congress.
"Personal" goes on to detail how Jayapal's upbringing as an immigrant and the values of service and equality instilled in her by her parents have shaped her views on progressive policies like Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and real solutions to the housing crisis.
Coimbatore-born Jayapal, 61, is the elder sister of Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, 58, who is the first-ever Indian American woman in the US House of Representatives. She will battle it out in the May 21 primary against democratic frontrunners Oregon state Rep. Maxine Dexter and Gresham City Councilor Eddy Morales among others.
If she wins, Jayapal is expected to cruise through the general elections since the district is heavily democrat leaning.
