Syracuse University has appointed professor Shikha Nangia as the permanent chair of the department of biomedical and chemical engineering (BMCE) in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
Nangia, a faculty member at Syracuse University since 2012, is a recognized leader in computational modeling, specializing in research on biological barriers and their implications in treating complex diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Her work also addresses gut tight junctions, implantable device-related infections, and epigenetics. Among her most notable achievements is advancing understanding of the blood-brain barrier to improve drug delivery to the brain.
“I am deeply honored to lead this remarkable department, built on a strong foundation of innovation, collaboration, and excellence. Together, we will push the boundaries of engineering, fostering a culture that values diversity, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge,” Nangia said.
Dean J. Cole Smith lauded her leadership, saying, “Shikha Nangia’s exceptional contributions and mentorship exemplify the qualities needed to advance our research initiatives and academic excellence.”
Throughout her career, Nangia has received numerous awards, including the NSF Career Award and the ACS WCC Rising Star Award in 2022. Her dedication to teaching has earned her accolades such as the Chancellor’s Citation Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Experience and the Excellence in Graduate Education Faculty Recognition Award.
