Syracuse University's Maxwell School dean visits India

Dean of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, David M. Van Slyke, recently visited India to commemorate the school’s centennial and highlight its 70-year partnership with the country.
Van Slyke was joined by Dan Nelson, director of Accelerated Learning and Global Engagement at Maxwell, to emphasize the school’s global impact on public administration and international affairs. The Maxwell School has had a longstanding relationship with India, dating back to the years following India's independence.
During the visit, Van Slyke met with several Indian dignitaries, including Dharmendra Pradhan, India’s Minister of Education, as well as alumni and key partners.
“Meeting with Minister of Education Pradhan was truly an honor, and it put an exclamation point on what was a wonderfully productive visit where we spent time with our global partners and accomplished alumni,” said Van Slyke, reflecting on the visit. “I look forward to our continued partnership with India and its people.”
In addition to meeting Minister Pradhan, Van Slyke met with Surendra Nath Tripathi, director general of the Indian Institute for Public Administration (IIPA), which was founded in consultation with former Maxwell Dean Paul Appleby.
The dean’s visit also included discussions with faculty, civil servants, and military personnel at the IIPA, underscoring the school’s commitment to good governance initiatives. He further engaged with Dr. R Balasubramaniam from the Government of India’s Capacity Building Commission to explore collaborative governance strategies.
As the keynote speaker at the International Conference on Public Policy and Management at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, Van Slyke addressed an interdisciplinary audience of scholars and practitioners, sharing Maxwell’s insights on public policy research and practice.
The visit concluded with a centennial celebration at Delhi Gymkhana Club, attended by over 80 Maxwell alumni and partners.
