A primary school in the US, Sonal Bhuchar Elementary School in Missouri City, Texas, named after Indian-American trailblazer Sonal Bhuchar was formally dedicated to her memory during a ceremony in which speakers praised her efforts to the community and the needy.

D C Manjunath, Consul General of India and one of the prominent guests at the ceremony paid his respects and presented the primary school with special books on India.

"CG participated in an event organised to dedicate the new Sonal Bhuchar Elementary School at Fort Bend Independent School District. Paid tributes to Dr. Sonal Bhuchar an outstanding Indian American community member who dedicated her life to Education and community welfare in many capacities including as the former President of the Board of Trustees of the School District, after whom the School is named. Bengals- Royal Bengal Tiger is the mascot of the School," the consulate general of Huston, Texas, tweeted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

The Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) Board of Trustees overwhelmingly approved naming the elementary school after Sonal, who died of cancer complications in 2019 at the age of 58.

Sonal was a member of the FBISD board of directors, a renowned leader, a consensus builder, and a trailblazer. She served on the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees for six years, including two years as President.

She devoted her time to organizations such as Child Advocates, the Literacy Council, the Cultural Arts Foundation, and the Fort Bend Education Foundation.

In 2015, Texas Governor Greg Abbot appointed Sonal to the One Star National Service Commission Board which promotes volunteerism and oversees the administration of the AmeriCorps programmes in Texas.

Sonal, a professional physiotherapist, was born in Mumbai and received her bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Mumbai University before moving to Houston with her physician husband, Dr. Subodh Bhuchar, in 1984.

The school named after her received a spectacular dedication in August.

The school's mascot, Royal, a Bengal tiger, represents Bhuchar's Indian culture. ROYAL is an acronym that stands for Resilient, Optimistic, Youthful, Admirable, and Leader.
