Thalapathy Vijay starrer grosses US$16 million worldwide on day 1

Leo is the third film in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) following Karthi's Kaithi (2019) and Kamal Haasan's Vikram (2022).

Indian actor Vijay starrer Leo has grossed over US$ 16 million (₹140 crore) worldwide on day one of its release, a report by CNBC has revealed. As per the report the movie has surpassed the collection of Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan, since it released on October 19, 2023.

The action thriller was released in multiple languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. A social media post by film trade analyst Ramesh Bala on X, formerly known as Twitter, has disclosed that the film crossed the ₹100-crore (US$ 12 million) mark at the worldwide box office on the opening day.  

Quoting the industry tracker, Sacnilk.com, CNBC reported that director Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo has created a record by registering the ‘biggest worldwide opening for a Kollywood (Tamil) film’. It is the third movie of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), after Karthi's Kaithi (2019) and Kamal Haasan's Vikram (2022); and is inspired by A History of Violence (2005), which was an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name.

The movie features Vijay as Leo Das/ Parthiban in the lead; actor Sanjay Dutt as Antony Das, Arjun as Harold Das; Trisha as Sathya; and director and actor Gautham Vasudev Menon as forest ranger. The cast also includes Madonna Sebastian, George Maryan, Mathew Thomas, Mansoor Ali Khan, Mysskin, and Sandy Master.

The film was first announced in January 2023 as Vijay's 67th film. The music is composed by Kaavaalaa fame Anirudh Ravichander, the cinematography is handled by Manoj Paramahamsa and the editing is by Philomin Raj. The movie produced by S S Lait Kumar and Jagadish Palanisamy is backed by production company Seven Screen Studio. The scripting is done by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Rathna Kumar and Deeraj Vaidy.

Actor Vijay was last seen in Varisu released in January 2023 in Vamshi Paidipally's direction. Meanwhile, Trisha was last seen in Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: II, starring as Kundavai, released in April 2023.
