Rep. Thanedar introduces act to reduce health disparities

The Health Disparity Zones Act incorporates several key elements to address health disparities in underserved areas.

Congressman Shri Thanedar has introduced the “Health Disparity Zones Act of 2023” to tackle and diminish the notable health disparities existing in underserved and disadvantaged areas across the United States.

“The Health Disparity Zones Act is a crucial step towards bridging the gap in healthcare inequities that plague our nation,” said Thanedar. “By identifying and supporting these zones, we can target resources effectively to those communities most in need.”

The Health Disparity Zones Act incorporates several key elements to address health disparities in underserved areas. It involves the designation of Health Disparity Zones in areas with documented health disparities and poor health outcomes. The Act proposes comprehensive support through tax incentives, grants, and a student loan repayment program to attract and retain healthcare professionals in these zones.

Additionally, it suggests a 10-percent increase in Medicare Part B payment rates for services in Health Disparity Zones. The approach is collaborative, involving community-based organizations, healthcare providers, and local governments in the development of effective health strategies.

“This legislation is about recognizing and actively addressing the unequal health challenges faced by different communities,” Thanedar emphasized. “Healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and this Act takes significant steps towards making that a reality for all Americans.”

The Act includes a provision for annual reporting to Congress, ensuring transparency and accountability in its implementation.
