The Indian government announced the recipients of the 2025 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA), the country’s highest honor for overseas Indians. Among the 27 honorees are three Indian-Americans, Sharad Lakhanpal, Sharmila Ford, and Ravi Kumar S.
They will receive the awards from the President of India during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention's valedictory session. This year’s event themed “Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat”, will be held from January 8-10, 2025.
Sharad Lakhanpal, a Dallas-based board-certified rheumatologist, was recognised fir his contributions to medical science. With a career spanning decades, he has participated in hundreds of clinical trials as an investigator and is a clinical professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. An internationally sought-after speaker, Lakhanpal has also served as the president of the American College of Rheumatology.
Sharmila Ford, a Bengali cultural ambassador and a dedicated devotee of ISKCON, is recognized for her impactful community service. Married to Alfred Ford, the great-grandson of Henry Ford, she has been a torchbearer of Bengali heritage in the U.S. Through her advocacy and support for ISKCON initiatives, including the Chandrodaya Temple in Mayapur, she has bridged cultures and contributed to global spiritual outreach.
Ravi Kumar S., the CEO of Cognizant, has been recognized for his transformative leadership in business, particularly in IT and consulting. A visionary leader, he has held prominent roles in global organizations, including Infosys, and currently serves on various influential boards such as the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum.
Other honorees include Ajay Rane, Marialena Joan Fernandes, Philomena Ann Mohini Harris, Saraswati Vidya Niketan, Lekh Raj Juneja, Prem Kumar, Soukthavy Chowdhury, Krishna Savjani, Subramaniam K.V. Sathasivam, Sarita Boodhoo, Abhaya Kumar, Ram Niwas, Jaggannath Shekhar Asthana, Hindustani Samaj, Sudha Rani Gupta, Syed Anwar Khursheed, Atul Arvind Temurnikar, Robert Masih Nahar, Kaushik Laxmidas Ramaiya, Christine Carla Kangaloo ORTT, Ramakrishnan Sivaswamy Iyer, Bonthala Subbaiah Setty Ramesh Babu, and Baroness Usha Kumari Prashar.
