Three named to American Diabetes Association board

ADA is a voluntary health organization fighting to bend the curve on the diabetes epidemic

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has announced the list of principal officers and board of directors for 2024 which includes three Indian-origin experts.

Dr Mandeep Bajaj, Dr Rita Rastogi Kalyani, and Dr Madi Rajulapalli have been named to the 15-member board which is composed of medical, scientific, education, and executive business professionals, as per a news release issued by ADA.

Mandeep Bajaj, president of medicine and science, is the vice chair for clinical affairs in the department of medicine and a professor of medicine and molecular and cellular biology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

He is the chief of the endocrinology section at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center as well as the medical director of the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center Diabetes Program and Baylor Medicine Endocrinology and Diabetes.

Dr Bajaj also served on the associations’ scientific sessions meeting planning committee, finance committee, and the research grant review committee. He has been recognized with the Outstanding Physician-Clinician award by the ADA.

A medical graduate from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, he received his fellowship training in endocrinology and diabetes at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

Rita Rastogi Kalyani, president-elect of medicine and science, is an associate professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

She was chair of the ADA’s professional practice committee which was responsible for developing the ADA standards of care in Diabetes in 2018. Kalyani also served as president of the ADA’s Maryland community leadership board, according to the ADA release.

Dr Kalyani is currently an associate editor for BMJ open diabetes research and care. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard and she completed all her medical training at Johns Hopkins.

Madi Rajulapalli is the regional medical director for Medicare Case Management, CVS Health. She served as chief medical officer for Aetna Better Health of Louisiana before this role. She has held several leadership roles as chief medical officer for provider-based health plans and population health, as well as chief medical officer for community healthcare centers.

Dr Rajulapalli is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Quality and Utilization review physicians. She earned her Master’s in Business Administration from Texas Woman’s University and executive education from Harvard Business School.

She serves as president of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) board, Louisiana-Mississippi chapter, and also on the value-based care council—executive leadership advisory committee (EAC) for the National Association of Managed Care Physicians.
