Davidson college 2024 batch graduate, Toshaani Goel, has been named a Smith Scholar for her academic achievements, leadership, character, and community service.

The W. Thomas Smith Scholarship will fund her graduate studies at the University of London’s Warburg Institute, where she will pursue a master’s degree in the cultural, intellectual, and visual history of the Renaissance. The scholarship honors graduating seniors for their outstanding achievements and pays for a year of graduate study abroad.

Goel, originally from Chandigarh, India, was deeply influenced by her parents' emphasis on the importance of both STEM and the arts. Her early education at a Catholic convent school focused heavily on science and mathematics, but her parents encouraged her to explore arts and literature. This led her to the Mahindra United World College of India, where she embraced a broader humanities curriculum.

“A liberal arts education teaches you how to think and how to use what you’ve learned in vastly different classes to make your world a better place, ”Goel, who received the James B. Duke Scholarship at Davidson, said.

“At Davidson, I really sought to understand the human condition, and humanities allowed me to do that,” she said. During her time on campus, she engaged in various activities, from leading outdoor expeditions to interning at the Van Every/Smith Galleries.

Professors Patricio Boyer and Caroline Fache, praised her relentless pursuit of knowledge and intellectual growth. “Toshaani is exceptional; she’s one of the best students I’ve had in my career,” Professor Boyer said. “Whatever she does, she’ll be at the top of the heap, thinking about what she’s responsible for in the world.”

“Whatever Toshaani pursues, she’ll be an extraordinary leader. She’s one of the most curious people I’ve ever met,” said Annie Porges, senior associate director of Major Gifts in College Relations.

Goel looks forward to continuing her studies in the UK and beyond, with a focus on understanding and addressing global issues such as war, poverty, and oppression.
