Transform global trust deficit to one of trust and reliance, PM tells G20 Leaders
At the inaugural session the Indian Prime Minister welcomed the African Union formally into the G 20 fold

Against the backdrop of growing global divisiveness on political, economic and environmental issues the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi called on leaders attending the Group of 20 summit to move away from trust deficit to one of trust and reliance. In his opening remarks to the mega event in New Delhi, the Prime Minister also invited the Chair of the African Union to take seat as a permanent member of the grouping.
“Today, as the president of G20, India calls upon the world to come together to transform the global trust deficit into one of trust and reliance,” Modi said. “This is the time for all of us to move together… Be it the divide between North and South, the distance between the East and West, management of food and fuel, terrorism, cyber security, health, energy or water security, we must find a solid solution to this for future generations”, he added.
The G 20 summit got under way this morning at the Pragati Maidan with the Prime Minister personally welcoming every one of the leaders and invited dignitaries of international organisations to what promised to be a hectic agenda with a dose of apprehension on whether the attendees will be able to hammer out a joint statement or communique at the time of closing.
Modi, aside from Chairing the sessions of the summit, will also be involved in at least 15 bilaterals with heads of state and governments, not to mention the interactions at the working lunch and at the dinner hosted by the President of India tonight. Even before the summit started Modi had his meeting with the President of the United States, Joe Biden last night soon after his arrival in New Delhi.
After the morning session, the Indian Prime Minister has scheduled meetings with the leaders of Britain, Japan, Germany and Italy; and on Friday Modi had also a meeting with his counterpart from Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, where the two nations inked three agreements.
To loud applause from those gathered today, the Indian Prime Minister welcomed the 55 member African Union formally into the G 20 fold. For quite sometime now the African Union, representing the continent of Africa, had been a guest invitee along with other major international organisations like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
