U.S. President Joe Biden on Dec.27 issued a heartfelt statement mourning the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, highlighting his pivotal role in shaping the modern U.S.-India partnership.

“The unprecedented level of cooperation between the United States and India today would not have been possible without the Prime Minister’s strategic vision and political courage,” Biden said.

Singh, who passed at age 92 on Dec.26, is widely regarded as a transformative leader. Biden credited Singh with landmark achievements like the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement and the launch of the Quad partnership in the Indo-Pacific region, initiatives that have bolstered global diplomacy and security.

“He was a true statesman. A dedicated public servant. And above all, he was a kind and humble person,” Biden added.

Reflecting on his personal interactions with Singh, Biden recalled meeting him as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2008, during Singh’s 2009 State Visit to the U.S., and again in New Delhi in 2013. "As we discussed then, the U.S.-India relationship is among the most consequential in the world," he noted.

Biden praised Singh’s dedication to public service, emphasizing that his work would have a lasting impact on both nations and the world.

In his message, Biden expressed condolences to Singh’s wife, Gursharan Kaur, their children, and the people of India. “During this difficult time, we recommit to this vision to which Prime Minister Singh dedicated his life,” he said.

His vision for a better India and a better world will continue.”
