Donald Trump on Dec.10 announced the nomination of Harmeet K Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice.
Dhillon, a Sikh American civil rights attorney and Republican leader from California, is known for her advocacy on issues ranging from free speech to religious freedom.
Born in Chandigarh, India, Dhillon moved to the United States with her family at the age of two. She was raised in a Sikh household in North Carolina before relocating to New York City. Dhillon earned her undergraduate degree in Classical Studies and English from Dartmouth College and later completed her Juris Doctor at the University of Virginia School of Law, where she served on the Editorial Board of the Virginia Law Review.
She founded the Dhillon Law Group in 2006, a national firm with offices in California, New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Virginia.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump praised Dhillon's commitment to civil liberties. “Throughout her career, Harmeet has consistently stood up to protect our cherished civil rights, taking on Big Tech over censorship, defending Christians' right to pray during COVID, and challenging corporations that implement discriminatory woke policies.”
He also highlighted her deep connection to the Sikh community, emphasizing her dedication to enforcing civil rights and election laws "fairly and firmly."
I'm extremely honored by President Trump's nomination to assist with our nation's civil rights agenda. It has been my dream to be able to serve our great country, and I am so excited to be part of an incredible team of lawyers led by @PamBondi. I cannot wait to get to work!

Dhillon expressed gratitude for the nomination in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging both Trump and her family. “I’m extremely honored by President Trump’s nomination to assist with our nation’s civil rights agenda,” she wrote. “I owe this moment to the unwavering support of my incredible mother and brother, and to the memory of my beloved father, Tejpal, and husband, Sarv, who are no longer with us. I hope to honor their legacy with God’s grace.”
Dhillon specializes in commercial litigation, employment law, First Amendment rights, election law, and civil rights. She also advises on election compliance, ethics, and campaign-related intellectual property.
As Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Dhillon will oversee critical areas of civil rights enforcement, including combating discrimination and upholding constitutional freedoms, marking another significant milestone in her illustrious legal career.
Dhillon becomes the fourth Indian-American to be nominated to a key position in the Trump 2.0 Cabinet, joining Dr. Jay Bhattacharya (National Institutes of Health), Vivek Ramaswamy (Department of Government Efficiency), and Kashyap 'Kash' Patel (FBI Director).
