Indian documentaries "While We Watched" by Vinay Shukla and "All That Breathes" by Shaunak Sen have been nominated for the prestigious Peabody Awards. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 9 in Los Angeles, United States.
The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors unveiled their selection of nominees on April 23, spotlighting 41 outstanding contenders across various categories including Documentary, News, Public Service, and Radio/Podcast.
Shukla's "While We Watched" casts a poignant spotlight on former NDTV luminary Ravish Kumar, while Sen's "All That Breathes" delves into the compelling narrative of two Muslim brothers safeguarding black kites, a bird of prey that is a vital component of New Delhi's ecosystem.
"While We Watched" traces Kumar's two-year journey amidst a backdrop of dwindling press freedoms and an onslaught of disinformation. It swiftly gained international acclaim post-release, resonating with audiences worldwide through its compelling portrayal of the landscape of Indian media amidst escalating governmental control. Described by the Peabody group as a "timely depiction of a newsroom in crisis," Shukla's film encapsulates Kumar's valiant struggle against the onslaught of fake news, plummeting ratings, and resultant cutbacks while steadfastly upholding the principles of factual journalism.
Sen's film, which was acquired by HBO, has received over 17 international awards, including recognition at Cannes. It highlights the efforts of the two brothers in preserving those birds amid environmental toxicity and social unrest in a makeshift basement hospital.
