Two students, who had recently moved to the United States from India, were found dead under mysterious conditions in their apartment in Hartford Connecticut on January 14.

While Connecticut police authorities are trying to establish the cause of death, they told a family member of one of the students that the deaths might have resulted from carbon monoxide poisoning due to excessive use of heaters.

Students were identified as Gattu Dinesh and Nikesh, aged 22 and 21 respectively. Dinesh’s family is from the Wanaparthy district in Telangana while Nikesh hailed from the Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh. Both moved to the U.S. less than a month ago.

According to media reports, they were pursuing a Master's degree in computer sciences from the University of Sacred Heart in Hartford. While they arrived in the U.S. separately, they ended up being roommates.

Dinesh’s uncle spoke to local press reporters in Telangana on January 15. He said the family was notified of the students’ death by the CT police.

“Both had returned to their room after dinner and slept on Saturday night. The next morning, their friends tried to wake them up, but there was no response from them, after which they informed the police, who reached the spot, broke open the door and found them lifeless on their bed. They shifted the bodies to the hospital, where they were declared dead,” the uncle explained.

The exact cause of death will be established after an autopsy and that they are trying to get the bodies of the deceased students back to India at the earliest.

Over 400 Indian students have died on foreign land since 2018 due to various reasons including natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions, as per a written reply provided in December 2023, by the Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan in Rajya Sabha.
