UAE leads in employing Indians abroad
3.554 million Indians are currently living in the UAE. The number went up from 3.419 million, recorded at the end of 2022
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the leading employer of Indian expatriates. V Muraleedharan, the Minister of State for External Affairs, recently informed the Lok Sabha of the most recent migration statistics, stating that exactly 3.554 million Indian expatriates currently reside in the seven independent states comprising the UAE. The Indian population in the UAE was 3.4 million at the end of 2022.
Muraleedharan stated that the UAE was the most popular overseas employment destination for Indian citizens. In addition to the UAE, four other Gulf nations, namely Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, employ Indians extensively. The total number of Indians employed in these five countries is 7.93 million.
During a previous visit to the UAE, the Minister heaped praise on Indians working abroad, who were previously referred to as "brain drain" – a term used to describe those who left the country for better opportunities elsewhere. “Earlier, Indians who received education in India but went abroad for work were termed "brain drain". We no longer use that word for the phenomenon now,” Muraleedharan said, adding, “We say Indian youth has transformed the whole world into their workplace.”
The Indian consulate in the UAE announced in August 2022 that the UAE intends to train and hire 10,000 highly skilled Indian workers by 2023 as part of the National Skill Development Corporation's (NSDC) Tejas (Training for Emirates Jobs and Skills) pilot programme, which was launched on March 27, 2022. The training is held in India and Dubai.
