UC San Diego is joining forces with Indian institutions to establish the GIFT International Fintech Institute (GIFT IFI), an initiative to position India as a global leader in financial technology.
The partnership involves Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), Ahmedabad University, and IIT Gandhinagar. The institute’s mission includes the development of academic programs, cutting-edge research, and partnerships with Indian fintech firms.
Prabal Gupta, executive director of U.S.-India Initiatives at UC San Diego, said the goal is to “cultivate the next generation of leaders, ensuring the future of fintech thrives on a foundation of innovation, collaboration and expertise.”
GIFT IFI will provide advanced training, foster research, and prepare professionals for the evolving fintech industry, according to UC San Diego chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “UC San Diego continues to rise as an academic institution attracting talent worldwide and producing extraordinary leaders in their disciplines. As the first American university to establish a presence [in GIFT City], we are proud to contribute to the growth and transformation of India’s fintech sector,” Khosla said.
UC San Diego’s School of Computing, Information and Data Sciences (SCIDS) will play a crucial role in supporting the initiative. SCIDS interim dean Rajesh K. Gupta highlighted the school’s capabilities in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing as pivotal to the institute's success.
GIFT IFI will offer stackable credential programs tailored to diverse learners, from recent graduates to mid-career professionals. Topics will include fintech foundations, cybersecurity, and AI/ML applications, said Pankaj Chandra, vice chancellor of Ahmedabad University.
IIT Gandhinagar director Rajat Moona described the collaboration as an opportunity to shape education and entrepreneurship in the Indian fintech sector. “I believe this consortium will create a platform that builds talent, critical thinking and entrepreneurial spirit, paving the way for a generation of global fintech leaders to transform India’s economic landscape,” he said.
