UCLA assistant professor of computer science, Aditya Grover, was awarded the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award.
The five-year, $500,000 grant will fund Grover’s groundbreaking research into generative artificial intelligence (AI) models designed to accelerate scientific discovery, particularly in addressing pressing sustainability challenges such as climate change and energy needs.
Grover’s research aims to develop AI models that can build new datasets from existing ones, creating a platform that is highly reliable, broadly applicable, and capable of operating with minimal human supervision.
According to a press statement, a central focus of this project is integrating large, diverse datasets to create more efficient and accurate computer simulations, forecasting methods, and experimental designs.
Generative AI, a form of deep learning, is pivotal to Grover’s work. His research group at UCLA, the Machine Intelligence (MINT) group, specializes in probabilistic machine learning, a branch of AI that applies statistical and probability-based approaches to predict outcomes. The MINT group’s projects focus heavily on climate science and sustainable energy applications.
In 2023, the group’s work on ClimaX, a deep learning model for weather forecasting and climate projections, was recognized for its high performance.
This marks Grover’s fourth early-career award in two years. In March, he was named a Schmidt Sciences AI2050 Early Career Fellow, receiving up to $300,000 for interdisciplinary AI research. Grover has also earned accolades from Forbes, Samsung, Google, Meta, and the National Academy of Science.
Grover holds a PhD in artificial intelligence from Stanford University, postdoctoral training from University of California Berkeley, and a B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
