Pacific Coast Business Times,a weekly business journal, has honored engineer Umesh Mishra with a Central Coast Innovation Award in recognition of his contributions to semiconductor technology and power electronics.
Mishra, the dean of the College of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara,(UCSB) is an expert in gallium nitride (GaN) technology. His pioneering work has significantly advanced power electronics, leading to the development of more efficient and sustainable energy solutions.

Apart from research, Mishra has also made a mark as an entrepreneur. He co-founded Nitres in 1996, the first company to develop GaN-based LEDs and transistors. The company was later acquired by Cree, now Wolfspeed. In 2007, he co-founded Transphorm, which specializes in GaN-based high-voltage power conversion. The company, which went public in 2020, holds more than 1,000 patents and applications.
Since becoming the eighth dean of UCSB’s College of Engineering in 2023, Mishra has introduced initiatives to support faculty and staff while maintaining his reputation as an accessible leader.
The journal also recognized Tyler Susko, an associate teaching professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, with the award for his company Cadense, which developed a shoe designed to assist individuals with foot drop.
