The University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) has named Dr Shivayogi Bhusnurmath as its new dean of basic sciences.
The award-winning medical educator and pioneering physician is set to advance the focus of the university on providing quality medical education and ensuring the continued growth and development of the institution, an official statement noted.
Bhusnurmath has extensive experience in developing curricula at leading medical schools. He received his training in India from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh and went to get his fellowship from the Royal College of Pathologists, London.
Over the course of his career, Bhusnurmath has taught pathology to medical students and postgraduate residents in countries around the world, including India, the UK, Oman, Japan, and Canada among others. He has also conducted more than 150 workshops and CMEs internationally on medical education and received recognition from the Royal College of Pathology with a Lifetime Achievement Award for global pathology education of medical students and residents.
"Dr. Bhusnurmath's remarkable career exemplifies an unwavering dedication to creating outstanding medical education programs. His approach resonates deeply with our mission of delivering personalized education and preparing our graduates to lead with compassion and distinction," a statement issued by the educational institution noted.
"At UMHS, our commitment to student success is paramount," said Warren Ross, president of UMHS. "Dr. Bhusnurmath's remarkable career exemplifies an unwavering dedication to creating outstanding medical education programs, characterized by a holistic and results-oriented approach," he added.
At UMHS, Bhusnurmath will work on creating additional avenues for active learning, underscoring small group activities for enhanced clinical training. He will also focus on faculty development to strengthen learning objectives, assessment tools, and teaching practices.
Reacting to his appointment, Bhusnurmath, the new dean of basic sciences at UMHS, said, "Upon meeting with president Ross and visiting UMHS, it becomes immediately apparent that nurturing student growth is at the heart of our institution."
"The leadership team's genuine concern for students and the exceptional educational background and clinical experience of our faculty underscores our commitment to excellence. My foremost goal is to enhance learning opportunities and equip our future physicians with the skills necessary for long-term success," he added.
Founded in 2007, UMHS is a small medical school committed to student support with successful residency placements in the United States and Canada. It is headquartered in St Kitts & Nevis.
