The University of Michigan’s College of Engineering has awarded Somya Valecha, a computer engineering undergraduate, the Distinguished Academic Achievement Award for her outstanding academic record, leadership, and service.

In her capacity as the Society of Women Engineers' Professional Excellence Officer, Valecha has planned courses on interview techniques and networking events. In addition, she oversaw the ‘Women in Leadership’ conference and was the hospitality chair for the Fall Engineering Career Fair.

Valecha also trains machine learning models for autonomous aircraft as a sub-lead for M-Fly's Autonomous Software team. She is an outreach member of Project RISHI, a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable development in rural India.

She will travel to Washington, D.C., from April 1–2, 2025 for the SWE Congressional Outreach Trip, where she will advocate for policies ensuring equal opportunities for women in STEM. After the semester, she will participate in SWEIndia in Walchandnagar, India, aiming to inspire young students in STEM. She has prepared for this by volunteering at the Summer Engineering Exploration Camp and STEM nights for underserved schools in Detroit.

With another one to two years of coursework remaining, Valecha remains committed to leadership and service. “I want to bridge gaps and uplift others like me,” she said, “and to lead with empathy, creativity, and a focus on long-term impact.”
