The University of Milan is set to welcome its  first chair of Indian studies in mid 2025 to foster a deeper understanding of Indian culture and languages among students.

The chair was endowed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Government of India. The agreement for its establishment was signed by Ambassador to Italy Vani Rao and University of Milan rector Elio Franzini.

As per the agreement, the ICCR will appoint an Indian academic as a visiting professor at the University of Milan to teach Hindi and support related research activities.  While the university already offers courses in Hindi, Sanskrit, Indian Art, and other subjects, the the creation of the Chair of Indian Studies is expected to elevate the university’s commitment to expanding knowledge about India.

The new chair will be housed in both the Department of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Mediations, and the Department of Literary Studies, Philology and Linguistics, a university statement noted.

Rector Franzini emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Openness towards other cultures is crucial to create a space for dialogue that can truly act as a driver of personal growth and development for everybody, but most of all for our students, so as to prepare them, through an excellent education, for a job market that transcends geographical borders.”

Previously, in 2021, ICCR established a Hindi chair in the University of L'Orientale, Naples, reflecting the long standing tradition of Indological studies in Italy. “India and Italy enjoy strong people-to-people connect based on shared cultural values and civilisational ties,” a press release stated.
