The University of Minnesota has announced the appointment of Anant Maringanti as the new director of its Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC).
Maringanti, an accomplished scholar and practitioner with extensive expertise in interdisciplinary research and social justice, will assume the role later this spring.
Harvey Charles, vice provost for International Affairs, welcomed the appointment, stating, “Anant’s exceptional experience and dedication to fostering visionary, collaborative leadership make him an outstanding choice to lead ICGC. We are thrilled to welcome him back to the University and look forward to the impact of his leadership.”
Currently, he serves as the director of the Hyderabad Urban Lab, a multidisciplinary research initiative under the Right to the City Foundation. Under his leadership, the Lab has emerged as a leading platform for urban research and education in India, addressing the challenges of rapidly urbanizing regions.
Since 2012, Maringanti has spearheaded initiatives blending research and practical interventions, mentoring over 50 young scholars, securing grants from organizations like UNICEF and WIPRO Foundation, and fostering collaborations with institutions such as the Centre for Policy Research and the Indian Institute of Human Settlements.
Maringanti has also taught graduate courses at the National University of Singapore and the University of Hyderabad. His research, widely published in national and international academic journals, explores social movements, the politics of development, and urbanization, further establishing him as a thought leader in these fields.
Reflecting on his new role, Maringanti said, “My work has always been driven by a commitment to bridging the gap between theory and practice. I look forward to contributing to ICGC’s legacy of fostering interdisciplinary approaches to global challenges and supporting the next generation of scholars.”
A graduate of the University of Minnesota with an MA and PhD in Geography, Environment, and Society, Maringanti is also a former ICGC Scholar. His academic and professional career has centered on interdisciplinary approaches to critical global challenges, with a particular focus on South Asia.
