US, Canada top study abroad destinations for Indians

The UK has surpassed Australia, securing the third position as the preferred study destination, indicating changing trends in international education.

According to the Indian Students Mobility Report 2023, Canada and the US continue to be the top choices for Indian students. Meanwhile, the UK has surpassed Australia, to take the third position as the preferred study destination, indicating changing trends in international education.

The analysis reveals that Indian students, numbering around 240,000, make a substantial contribution to the US economy, amounting to a total expenditure of US $12.48 billion. This includes US $7.2 billion allocated for academic fees, US $2.9 billion for accommodation, and US $2.4 billion for other living expenses.

In Canada, the approximately 300,000 Indian students contribute an estimated total expenditure of US $11.7 billion. This includes US $6 billion allocated for academic fees, US $3 billion for accommodation, and US $2.7 billion for other living necessities.

The economic contribution of Indian students, numbering around 76,500, in Australia is estimated at a total of US $3.9 billion. Meanwhile, Indian students, approximately 132,000 in the UK, contribute an estimated total expenditure of US $5.9 billion.

According to the report, approximately 1.2 million students were studying abroad in 2022. The report projects that this figure is anticipated to reach 1.3 million by the end of 2023, with approximately 0.75 million (58 percent) expected to be pursuing higher education in Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia. The report also estimates that international enrollments of Indian students will touch 300,000 in the US and 250,000 in Canada in 2025.

As per the report, the UK witnessed the highest year-on-year growth, closely trailed by Canada. The US also experienced substantial growth, while Australia showed minimal growth.
