US Consulate to open American Corner in Kochi

The newly established American Corner will become part of a vast network of over 600 American Spaces worldwide

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has partnered with the US Consulate General Chennai  to establish an American Corner in its campus.

CUSAT signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the US mission to establish the center that will empower future leaders in India and the United States through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

The agreement was signed by US Consul General Christopher W. Hodges and CUSAT faculty Dr. V. Meera, during a visit by the US Education Trade Delegation, comprising 18 US universities, to the university. vice chancellor of the university Dr. P.G. Sankaran was present on the occasion.

The newly established American Corner at CUSAT will become part of a vast network of over 600 American Spaces worldwide. These spaces, operated independently by host institutions like CUSAT, receive backing from the US government for various programs across six key areas: alumni engagement, English programs, STEM programs, information about the U.S., Education USA, and cultural and community engagement.

The establishment will provide valuable academic and research resources through its eLibraryUSA platform, along with English language proficiency and professional development programs. It will also conduct media literacy workshops, facilitate exchange opportunities with US institutions, and offer advising services for those interested in studying in the US.

According to a statement by the university, the agreement will facilitate student exchanges and research collaborations between CUSAT and American universities.

“We are delighted to partner with CUSAT to open a new American Corner right here in the heart of Kochi. This faculty-student led-project will enable the people of Kerala to build a closer relationship with the United States, while at the same time, open the door for us to support the amazing work that CUSAT and the Centre for Science in Society are doing to inspire and empower the next generation of STEM enthusiasts, future scientists, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs,” Consul General Hodges said.

All activities at the American Corner CUSAT will be free of charge and open to all. The corner is anticipated to open in 2024.
