U.S. President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigrants is starting to take effect. A US Army C-17 military plane carrying Indian immigrants from the US is expected to arrive in Amritsar on Feb. 5, according to a US official.

In this regard, Nancy Youssef, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal in Washington, DC, posted on X. Quoting US military officials, Youssef wrote, “A US military C-17 carrying dozens of migrants who entered the country illegally left earlier today for Amritsar, India, defense officials said. It's the first such flight outside this hemisphere. It will stop in Guam before its scheduled February 5 arrival, local time, officials said.”

Local authorities in Amritsar have yet to confirm the development, and media buzz has surged in Punjab since the information became public.

Trump has enlisted the military's help to implement his agenda against illegal immigration, and it is estimated that more Indians will be deported from the US in the coming days. In addition to India, the US has also sent flights carrying illegal immigrants to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras.

The Indian government's Ministry of External Affairs has already stated that it is prepared to take back Indians living illegally in the US and other countries. A large number of Indians from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, and other states have been illegally entering the US via the Dunki route through countries like Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. However, this process has largely come to a halt since Trump became president.

The Trump administration is continuously cracking down on illegal immigration, and the US has arranged special flights to repatriate thousands of Indians detained in Texas and California.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised the issue of what the State Department has termed "irregular immigration" with his Indian counterpart, Dr. S. Jaishankar. The Indian External Affairs Minister had said that New Delhi "strongly opposes" illegal immigration to the US.

"Many other illegal activities are associated with this. It is not beneficial and it is not good for our reputation. If there are any of our citizens who are not here legally and we are sure that they are our citizens, then we are ready to take them back to India," Jaishankar had said.

According to a report, the US has sent back more than 1,100 illegal immigrants from India between October 2023 and September 2024.
