In light of the recent floods in Tamil Nadu, the US State Department has urged Indians and US citizens residing in or traveling to India to enroll in the revamped Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to stay informed and safe during emergencies.

The Department of State introduced a new version of STEP on Sep.16. It is accessible on the US Embassy and Consulates of India website. The updated platform enables users to manage country-specific alerts with ease, offering features such as:

  • Customizable email subscriptions for real-time updates on health, weather, safety, and security.
  • Enrollment for multiple trips or locations at once.
  • The service is free and designed to facilitate prompt communication between U.S. embassies or consulates and citizens during crises such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or family emergencies.

"Enrolling in STEP ensures that citizens receive timely alerts and allows embassies to provide critical assistance in emergencies. We strongly encourage travelers and residents abroad to enroll or re-enroll today to access these enhanced features," the State Department emphasized in a statement.

With its real-time updates and planning tools, the program also aids individuals in making informed decisions while traveling or living overseas. The Department highlighted that the program's importance has become even more evident following the Tamil Nadu floods and other global emergencies.
