The United States has planned to turn its visa process paperless after a pilot project showed promising results.

According to Julie M. Stufft, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Visa Services, the small-scope pilot of the paperless visa helped streamline the process for immigrant visas. However, she affirmed that the paperless visa process would be gradual, estimating a timeframe of at least 18 months for full implementation.

“It will take us probably 18 months to have widespread use of this or longer. But it is very exciting that we have had this first step where we have seen visitors come through and, in this case, they were immigrant visas without physical paper in their passport,” Stufft said, while addressing a roundtable discussion.

The initial phase of the pilot project took place in the diplomatic post in Dublin, showcasing the feasibility of adopting a digital approach. The ultimate goal was to create an application or a comparable digital solution to allow individuals to display their visa status without requiring a physical copy of their passport.

Despite the gradual nature of the transition, the paperless visa program is expected to yield benefits such as a simplified renewal process and providing travelers with an easier visa application.
