The University of San Diego (USD) has named Nikhil Yadav, the new chair of the computer science department at the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering.
Yadav, who joined USD as an associate professor in Fall 2024, brings expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. His research focuses on pervasive computing and the application of AI to build contextually aware computing systems.
Prior to joining USD, Yadav served as computer science faculty at St. John’s University in New York, where he facilitated the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accreditation and led the internship programs.
Apart from academia, Yadav has worked in private sector industry software engineering roles and maintains active collaborations with industry, serving as the consulting CTO for Collidescope Inc., a firm focused on digital ESG solutions. His entrepreneurial drive led to the founding of a technology startup based on his research in speech biomarker analysis during his doctoral studies at the University of Notre Dame.
Commenting on the new role, Yadav emphasized his vision for the department which includes strengthening USD’s national footprint through experiential learning and industry partnerships. "I was inspired to take on this role as an opportunity to drive this forward by empowering my colleagues, supporting innovation, collaborative teaching, and research, “ he said.
He underscored the need for curriculum adaptability in response to evolving technological trends, highlighting plans for continuous evaluation in AI, cybersecurity, and quantum computing. "Being dynamic and quick to respond to the needs of the evolution in this field will be of paramount importance," he noted.
Yadav also plans to foster innovation and entrepreneurship by connecting students with industry leaders, startup accelerators, and research initiatives. He cited opportunities such as the Torero Entrepreneurship Challenge (TECh) and the potential expansion of engineering entrepreneurship courses.
As a former facilitator of ABET accreditation, Yadav affirmed its importance at USD. "ABET serves as a benchmark for academic excellence, ensures industry alignment, and enhances our graduates' career opportunities."
Dean Chell Roberts welcomed Yadav’s appointment, stating, "In the rapidly evolving landscape of computer science, we need a leader who not only understands what it is to be on the cutting edge but someone who helps to shape it."
