USF honors Srinivas Katkoori with research achievement award
The award recognized Katkoori for his groundbreaking work in secure IoT systems and cybersecurity innovations.

The University of South Florida (USF) has awarded Indian-origin associate professor of computer science and engineering, Srinivas Katkoori, the outstanding research achievement award, for his pioneering work in smart and cyber-secure internet-of-things (IoT) systems.
The award will be presented on Sept. 17, during a ceremony honoring 27 distinguished faculty members across USF's various departments.
Katkoori’s contributions to cybersecurity and smart hardware design have garnered national attention, particularly through a highly competitive five-year, $3.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This grant, the largest cybersecurity funding ever awarded to USF, supports training 28 undergraduate and graduate students in cutting-edge cybersecurity technologies, with a focus on serving government sectors after graduation.
In 2023, Katkoori published one peer-reviewed journal article and eight conference papers. One of his papers, presented at the IEEE Symposium on Smart Electronic Systems (iSES), received a best paper award — a prestigious honor given to only four out of 140 submissions. His research advances the security of IoT hardware, specifically through innovations like physical unclonable functions and automated platooning algorithms for connected vehicles.
Additionally, Katkoori was granted a U.S. patent for a novel secure hardware design in November 2023, further solidifying his reputation as a leader in his field. His efforts aim to improve the safety and efficiency of modern IoT systems, particularly in sectors like transportation and national security.
“USF faculty continually demonstrate their skills in conducting high-impact research and innovation to advance frontiers of knowledge, solve global problems, mentor and empower students, and improve lives,” said Sylvia Wilson Thomas, vice president for USF research and innovation.
Katkoori holds a PhD in computer engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and a Bachelor’s of Science in electronics and communication engineering at Osmania University, Hyderabad, India.
