The University of Maryland has awarded the 2025 MPower Professor distinction to College Park (UMCP) professor Utpal Pal in recognition of his contributions to collaborative research in tick-borne diseases.

Pal, a professor of veterinary medicine in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, is among seven faculty members awarded the distinction under the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower). The initiative fosters research collaborations between UMCP and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB).

Each MPower Professor will receive $150,000 over three years to support salary or research activities. Pal’s work focuses on Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections, leveraging molecular and cellular biology to advance scientific understanding and vaccine development.

“I’m deeply inspired by this incredible group of MPower Professors, who are not only dedicating themselves to solving some of the most complex problems facing society, but also embracing the power of cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration,” UMCP president Darryll J. Pines said in a statement.

Pal has published more than 100 research papers and book chapters, contributing to scientific advancements in infectious disease research. His work has earned recognition from federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health. He also collaborates with pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. on the development of novel anti-tick vaccines.

He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in zoology from the University of Calcutta in India and completed postdoctoral training at the Yale University School of Medicine.
