Canadian Elite Basketball League’s (CEBL) team Vancouver Bandits unveiled a new logo and jersey to celebrate South Asian culture ahead of the 2024 season that will kick off in May 2024.

The team will wear the jersey for the first-ever ‘South Asian Heritage’ theme game on June 1 against the Calgary Surge. The two teams will go head-to-head for a rematch of 2023’s tightly contested western conference finals matchup.

The logo and jersey are designed by visual artist Sandeep Johal using phulkari patterns. The 2024 South Asian heritage jersey pays homage to folk embroidery traditions as part of a vibrant showcase of South Asian culture and design techniques, according to the merchandise website.

The Bandits’ logo is a red fox wearing a blue bandit mask. Johal’s reimagined logo has a pink bandit mask “to evoke a sense of energy and passion.” The eye of the fox has been lengthened and defined to create a focal point within the logo. There is a paisley pattern, a popular South Asian motif, on the fox’s ear, and phulkari pattern lining the sides of the jersey honors the embroidery traditions practiced and inherited by the women of Punjab in India and Pakistan.

“It’s a celebration of being South Asian. It’s a celebration of our culture. It’s very vibrant. It’s very joyful. It’s very colorful and I bring that into my work a lot. I leaned into Phulkari, which is folk embroidery from Punjab,” Johal said about the South Asian logo and jersey, according to a news release.

He added, “When you see your culture being represented at such a grand scale, it makes you feel like you have the ability to be a part of that and that maybe this space is for you. I'm loving this shift, where we're seeing organizations open up those spaces for all of us.”

“Over the past few seasons, we have had it in our plans to unveil a Vancouver Bandits South Asian Heritage Game. Through the support and encouragement from our fans, we are excited to unveil this inaugural event, which is bolstered by a special jersey designed by Sandeep Johal that represents the cultural diversity of the South Asian community in British Columbia,” said Bandits team president Dylan Kular.

The jersey can be pre-ordered till April 19. Sizes range from small to 3-XL in the color navy. It is priced at US$100 and will be available for pick up at the Jun. 1 game or can be shipped out. A very small quantity will be available to buy at the venue.
