Varun Ghosh, an Indian Australian barrister, is expected to become a member of the Australian Senate, marking a significant step forward in the country's political representation of multicultural populations. Ghosh takes over from Senator Patrick Dodson, who is resigning due to health reasons.

The appointment was formally confirmed during a rare joint sitting of the Western Australian Parliament. During the session, the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council unanimously selected Ghosh to represent Western Australia in the Senate of the Federal Parliament, Australia Today reported.

“The Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council have chosen Senator Varun Ghosh to represent Western Australia in the Senate of the Federal Parliament,” the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia announced on X.

Patrick Gorman, a representative of WA, congratulated Ghosh, saying, “Congratulations to my old friend and newest parliamentary colleague, Varun Ghosh. Endorsed by the WA Parliament today to join the Senate.”

Born to Indian immigrants in Canberra, Ghosh, relocated to Perth with his parents, where he attended Christ Church Grammar School. He pursued his studies in arts and law at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and furthered his education at Darwin College, Cambridge.

Throughout his time at UWA, he actively participated in the university's Guild Council, serving as both chair and secretary. He is also a recipient of the Frank Downing Law Scholarship.

Currently, he is associated with Francis Burt Chambers, specializing in commercial and administrative law, along with a focus on industrial relations and employment law.

The barrister is set to assume his position in the Australian Senate next week, with the Labour Party officially confirming him as their chosen representative for Western Australia (WA).
