The International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD) recognized Northern Michigan University assistant professor Vikash Kumar for his contributions to the organization during its 24th biennial conference at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences in Kerala.
ICSD is a global network of scholars, practitioners, and students dedicated to promoting social justice, economic development, and capacity building. Established in the 1970s, it collaborates with organizations like the UN and World Bank to address global challenges through research, education, and policy advocacy.
Serving as a board member and director of information and technology at ICSD, Kumar was honored for his role in advancing its mission and expanding its global reach. He has played a key part in organizing ICSD’s conferences, fostering international collaborations, and supporting social development issues, the organization’s peer-reviewed journal.
Kumar’s study, Identifying Skill Gaps in Human Rights Organizations in the Neoliberal Era, highlights the challenges faced by grassroots organizations serving marginalized communities. He identified skill shortages in funding mobilization, program management, strategic planning and advocacy, emphasizing the need for capacity building.
Accepting the honor, Kumar announced that the ICSD’s 25th biennial conference will be hosted by the University of Georgia School of Social Work in 2027. He emphasized the importance of global collaboration in social work education and expressed hope that NMU students and faculty will actively participate.
“It is essential to have continuous, deliberate discussions, especially when we are living in a globalized world. Such conferences also provide opportunities to meet scholars and develop a shared understanding of what is happening around the world. This helps us refine our courses and curricula, making them more relevant as we prepare students to tackle future challenges,” Kumar said.
He has a PhD from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, a Masters of Social Work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and Bachelors of Social Work from the Indira Gandhi National Open University.
