The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced July 19 that former foreign secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra will be the next Ambassador of India to the United States of America.

Kwatra, a seasoned diplomat with over 32 years of experience, is expected to take up his new assignment shortly, the Ministry said. He succeeds Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who vacated the position earlier this year.

Kwatra, a 1988 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, has served in several significant capacities throughout his career. In April 2022, he was appointed as India's Foreign Secretary. Prior to that, he was the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations.

Kwatra’s diplomatic career includes a notable tenure as the Ambassador of India to France from August 2017 to February 2020. During this period, he was instrumental in enhancing India-France relations across various domains. Additionally, Kwatra served as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office from October 2015 to August 2017, where he contributed to key policy formulations.

Kwatra is renowned for his extensive expertise in handling relations with India's neighboring countries, as well as major global players such as the United States, China, and Europe. His appointment comes at a crucial time, with India seeking to bolster its strategic partnerships amid evolving global dynamics.
