Vivek Goel and Poonam Puri receive Order of Ontario

The 2024 appointees will be formally invested in a ceremony in Toronto next year.

The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Edith Dumont announced the 2024 Order of Ontario appointees, the Canadian’s province’s highest civilian honor recognizing individuals who have made a lasting impact in their fields. 

Among this year’s 29 honorees are Indian-origin residents Vivek Goel, a leading public health researcher, and Poonam Puri, a distinguished scholar in corporate law and governance.
Goel, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo has a career spanning academia, policy-making, and health services evaluation. Known internationally for his advocacy of evidence-based health policies, he has played a pivotal role in shaping Canada’s response to public health challenges.

Throughout his career, Goel has served in influential roles, including as a special advisor to the president of the University of Toronto and as a professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. His efforts have significantly advanced health policy development and improved health services evaluation in Canada and beyond. A graduate of McGill University and the University of Toronto, Goel also holds an MS in Biostatistics from Harvard University. 

Professor Poonam Puri has dedicated over 25 years to corporate law, governance, and investor protection. She co-founded the Osgoode Investor Protection Clinic, the first of its kind in Canada, providing pro bono legal aid to individuals facing financial harm. Her scholarship includes nearly 100 academic works, and she has advised governments and regulators worldwide on financial regulation.

Puri also serves on several high-profile boards, including the Canada Infrastructure Bank and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, where she is chair. Her numerous accolades include the Law Society of Ontario’s Law Society Medal and the Royal Society of Canada’s Yvan Allaire Medal. She pursued her LLB from the University of Toronto, and an LLM from Harvard law school.
