Vivek Ramaswamy behind Donald Trump in GOP primary race

Support for the Indian American has gone up by eight points among GOP voters.

Vivek Ramaswamy, an American politician of Indian descent running for the Republican nomination for president in 2024, has strengthened his lead over his Republican primary opponents in the days leading up to the first GOP presidential primary debate, which will take place on August 23 in Milwaukee.

As per an Emerson College poll, he is second on the leaderboard, tied with Florida governor Ron DeSantis with 10 percent of voters' support, only trailing behind only former president Donald Trump who enjoys 56 percent of the voter support. Other contenders Mike Pence and Chris Christie, got 3 per cent of the votes.

The poll also revealed that the support for Trump is steady. His opponent DeSantis who until a few months ago was projected to defeat Trump has experienced a decline in support over the summer, by eleven points, while the support for Ramaswamy went up by eight points.

“Ramaswamy has improved among Republican voters with a postgraduate degree, a group that has previously been part of the DeSantis’ base,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College polling said. “In the June Emerson poll, 38 percent of postgraduates supported DeSantis in the primary, which has dropped to 14percent this month. Instead, 17percent support Ramaswamy and 32 percent Trump.”

Kimball also revealed the demographic that is in favour of Indian-origin politico. “Ramaswamy has made inroads among younger Republican Primary voters: 16 percent of voters under 35 support Ramaswamy, compared to 48 percent who support Trump and 15 percent DeSantis. DeSantis still holds 12 percent of voters over 65, while Trump holds 50% among this group and Ramaswamy holds 3 percent.”
