Biotech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has stepped down from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to pursue a gubernatorial bid in his home state of Ohio.

Ramaswamy's departure was confirmed just hours after Donald J Trump assumed the presidency on Jan.20. Trump had appointed him to co-lead DOGE alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk, tasking the department with streamlining the federal government by eliminating bureaucratic inefficiencies and cutting regulations as part of Trump's "Save America" agenda.

"It was my honor to help support the creation of DOGE. I’m confident that Elon & team will succeed in streamlining government. I’ll have more to say very soon about my future plans in Ohio. Most importantly, we’re all-in to help President Trump make America great again!" Ramaswamy posted on X.

Ramaswamy briefly ran against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination last year but later emerged as one of his most prominent and vocal supporters. He had previously stated that he was postponing his political aspirations in Ohio to focus on leading the DOGE initiative.

Anna Kelly, a spokesperson for the commission, praised Ramaswamy’s contributions. “Vivek Ramaswamy played a critical role in helping us create DOGE. He intends to run for elected office soon, which requires him to remain outside of DOGE, based on the structure that we announced today. We thank him immensely for his contributions over the last two months and expect him to play a vital role in making America great again.”

Ramaswamy, the son of Indian immigrants, built a lucrative career in hedge funds and pharmaceutical research after graduating from Harvard University and Yale Law School. He gained national recognition in conservative circles as a vocal opponent of identity politics and diversity initiatives, endorsing Trump after finishing fourth in the 2024 GOP primary's Iowa caucuses.

Trump’s appointment of Ramaswamy and Musk to DOGE underscored his administration’s push to overhaul the federal workforce, cut programs, and reduce government oversight. With Ramaswamy’s departure, Musk will now lead the initiative alone.

Ramaswamy has yet to formally announce his candidacy for Ohio governor but is expected to do so in the coming weeks.
