The Atlantic Council, a think tank based in Washington DC, announced on May.29 that Romesh Ratnesar has been appointed as its senior vice president of engagement, effective June.24. Ratnesar, an accomplished media leader and former State Department official, will oversee the council’s events and communications teams.

Most recently, Ratnesar managed Bloomberg Opinion’s 10-person Editorial Board, where he was involved in conceiving, assigning, writing, and editing editorials on global economics, finance, and domestic and foreign policy. Additionally, he served as a commentator on Bloomberg TV, radio, and social media.
In a statement, Ratnesar highlighted the Atlantic Council's reputation for its impactful work on global issues. He expressed excitement about joining the organization, describing it as innovative and dynamic, and expressed eagerness to contribute to shaping its future direction.
Prior to his tenure at Bloomberg, Ratnesar held positions as the deputy editor and international editor of Bloomberg Businessweek and as the deputy managing editor of TIME Magazine. At TIME, he served as a staff writer and foreign correspondent, covering significant stories from regions including the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
Ratnesar managed TIME’s Baghdad bureau following the 2003 invasion and, in his role as the magazine’s foreign editor, supervised its reporting on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, from 2015 to 2017, he served as chief of staff to the US Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Richard Stengel.
Ratnesar is also the author of “Tear Down This Wall: A City, a President and the Speech that Ended the Cold War,” a book that chronicles President Reagan’s historic 1987 address at the Brandenburg Gate.
