Western Illinois University hosts ‘A Taste of India’
The event was an immersive experience into the rich tapestry of Indian history and cuisine.

In a vibrant celebration of cultural diversity, Western Illinois University’s Phi Beta Delta recently hosted ‘A Taste of India’ at the Christ facility in Macomb.
The international honorary organization brought together about 90 students, faculty, and community members for an immersive experience into the rich tapestry of Indian history and cuisine, a statement by the university said.
The primary objective of the event was to raise funds for scholarships supporting WIU study abroad students and international initiatives at the university.
The menu, curated by Phi Beta Delta members Dave Behymer and Jack McKinnon, featured a delectable spread including Butter Chicken, Vegetable Rice, Roti, and the exquisite Gulab Jamun dessert.
The menu selection aimed to provide attendees with an authentic taste of India with culinary contributions from WIU students hailing from the country.
Following the meal, WIU student Washim Shaik took the stage and delivered a presentation on Indian culture and history. He shared insights into the diverse traditions and rich heritage of the country.
The cultural immersion continued with a vocal performance of Indian music by Samidha Prassad and traditional Indian dances by Prassad, Vishnu Vandana Pyatia, and Neena Remdala.
Phi Beta Delta president John Carlson expressed the organization’s commitment to fostering a global community through such events. “Our scholarship fundraiser dinners, which typically highlight a different country each year, help give everyone a greater sense of our global community.”
He also acknowledged the collective effort of the organization’s members and emphasized the events’ role in advancing international education for students and the broader community.
In addition, Carlson announced that the next fundraiser is scheduled for November 2024.
Phi Beta Delta, which is open to all WIU faculty, students, and community members interested in international education and cultural exchange, regularly organizes culture nights and events. Such initiatives support the acclimation of international students to American life while fostering a spirit of inclusivity and mutual understanding.
