American content creator Kristen Fischer is embracing Indian culture and sharing her life in New Delhi on her social media. She first visited India in 2017 with her husband, and later moved to the country permanently in 2021, mainly drawn to the culture and community.
She became popular with the notion- “Just an American mama enjoying raising her kids in Delhi.” Fischer has traded her American lifestyle for India’s vibrant energy and has made it her home for over two years.
Her social media offers a window into her family’s life in India, where she shares experiences like adopting a vegetarian diet, using public transport, exploring Indian cuisine, and sending her children to private schools. Fischer also documents her journey of embracing Indian traditions, from wearing traditional clothes and learning Hindi to participating in local festivals.
In one of her latest Instagram Reels, Fischer highlights the things she loves most about India, including its cultural diversity, street food, hired help, vegetarian options, weddings, festivals, and the ease of UPI transactions. She humorously adds jet sprays to her list of favorite discoveries.
However, Fischer frequently faces the question, "Why would you downgrade your kid's life to live in India when they could have the option to grow up in the USA?"
Many assume that life in India would offer her children fewer opportunities compared to the US. However, Fischer believes the opposite. She feels her children are thriving in India, benefiting from the friendships, experiences, and vibrant life they are exposed to. The rich cultural environment, close-knit communities, and diverse experiences contribute to their happiness and growth. Fischer believes this life is shaping them into stronger, happier, and more well-rounded individuals.
Fischer often shares her experiences and challenges of living in India as a foreigner. She faces situations like being overcharged by auto drivers and market vendors who assume she’s unaware of prices. Additionally, she and her family often attract stares, and people sometimes film them, especially her kids.
Despite the challenges, she values the strong sense of community and support they’ve found in India. While life as a foreigner can be tough, she says, “We love living in India and wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
In another recent Reel, Fischer shared her joy of wintertime in India, noting the special atmosphere with weddings, Christmas, and other events. “I love the hot chai and cool mornings. The bundled babies, cozy attire, and fresh produce make for great cuisine too,” she shared.
Fischer’s content also challenges stereotypes about India. Reflecting on her initial misconception that India was hot year-round, she humorously wrote, "I had no idea it got cold in India. My ignorant American self thought it would be hot here all year round. I was shocked to find out that Indian winters are probably even harder than US winters with the cold."
Through her candid insights, Fischer not only shares the unexpected realities of life in India but also dismantles preconceived notions with authenticity and humor.
Her Instagram page is filled with her expressing gratitude towards her Indian lifestyle and draws a contrast of how much better it is than America. “I get to eat so much more fresh fruits and vegetables in India than I ever did living in the USA,” she says, “Also, the variety of fresh and locally sourced produce is amazing. Not to mention the huge produce markets that gather many sellers in one convenient place. I love Indian sabzi stands, we don't have these in America.”
