White House shares update on Joe Biden’s India visit

Joe Biden will be in India between September 7-10, marking his first official visit to India as President.

The White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden will travel to India to participate in the G20 Summit and to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a bilateral setting. There was a cloud of doubt over his upcoming India visit as First Lady Jill Biden tested positive for Covid-19, however, the President has tested negative for the virus and will follow the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines when in India.

During a press briefing on September 5, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan shared an update on the President’s visit to India. “On Thursday, the President will travel to New Delhi, India, to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit. On Friday, President Biden will participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi of the Republic of India. And on Saturday and Sunday, the President will participate in the official sessions of the G20 Summit,” Sullivan said.

He added, “As the President heads to the G20, he is committed to working with emerging market partners to deliver big things together. That’s what we believe the world will see in New Delhi this weekend.”

Speaking about the objectives of the visit, Sullivan said, “Our focus is going to be on delivering for developing countries; making progress on key priorities for the American people, from climate to technology; and showing our commitment to the G20 as a forum that can actually, as I said before, deliver.” Sullivan shared that the U.S. is hoping to achieve all of these goals with support from PM Modi’s leadership and India’s presidency.

At the summit, the United States will also emphasize its continued support for the G20, which it sees as an essential platform for the world's 20 major economies to work together on international issues. Biden has visited India before, back in 2013 as U.S. Vice President. He will be in India for the G20 Summit between September 7-10, and it will mark his first official visit to the country as President.
