Wright State University and Premier Health have appointed Indian American physician Raj Mitra to a newly established dual leadership position as part of their growing partnership to develop an academic medical center.

Mitra will serve as dean of the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and chief academic officer at Premier Health, effective Mar.10, 2025. Currently a professor of medicine and associate dean of clinical affairs at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, Mitra will be the first to hold the dual role.

A nationally recognized expert in rehabilitation medicine and pain management, Mitra has contributed to major initiatives addressing the opioid crisis and has advised the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mitra’s distinguished career includes leadership roles at prominent institutions. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, Mitra served as the Senator Robert J. Dole professor and chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, where he expanded clinical services, grew residency and fellowship programs, and developed a National Institutes of Health-funded research program.

At Stanford University’s School of Medicine, he held positions as director of the Interventional Spine Center, chief of the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and medical director of rehabilitation services.

In the new role, he will lead efforts to integrate academic and clinical services at both institutions under an enhanced affiliation announced last December. His appointment follows a national search and reflects the organizations’ shared commitment to advancing healthcare and education in the Dayton region.

“This collaboration is particularly timely as southern Ohio and the nation prepare to face a significant physician shortage over the next decade,” said Mitra. “I was inspired by the shared mission of Wright State and Premier Health to support the community through innovative research, exceptional teaching, and world-class patient care.”

Wright State president Sue Edwards praised the selection, noting its potential to address critical healthcare needs. “Dr. Mitra’s leadership will expand the region’s medical workforce and strengthen our research culture, enhancing learning opportunities for students and improving access to specialized medical care for patients close to home,” Edwards said.

Premier Health president and CEO Mike Riordan emphasized Mitra’s alignment with the institutions’ missions. “Dr. Mitra embodies our commitment to clinical teaching excellence, a core focus for both organizations,” Riordan said.

Mitra earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. He completed residency and fellowship training in physical medicine, rehabilitation, and pain management at Harvard Medical School.
